Tanzania doesn't have a single "best" month — it depends on whether you're chasing the wildebeest migration, dry-season game viewing, Kilimanjaro's clearest skies, or the calmest seas in Zanzibar. Here's how the year actually breaks down.
The two dry seasons
Tanzania has two dry windows: the long dry season from June to October, and a shorter one from late December to February. Between them sit two rainy periods — the "long rains" (March–May) and "short rains" (November).
For safari (Serengeti & Ngorongoro)
- June–October: The classic choice. Dry grass and thin bush make animals easier to spot, and rivers concentrate wildlife around remaining water sources.
- January–March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti — huge concentrations of wildebeest and their calves, plus the predators following them.
- April–May: The quietest and cheapest months, but heavy rain can make some roads difficult, and long grass makes spotting animals harder.
Wildebeest migration timing
The migration moves in a rough circuit, not a fixed schedule — exact timing shifts year to year with the rains:
- December–March: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains (calving season).
- April–May: Moving through the central Serengeti.
- June–July: Western corridor, crossing the Grumeti River.
- August–October: Northern Serengeti, the famous Mara River crossings.
- November: Heading back south as the short rains begin.
For Kilimanjaro
The clearest, driest climbing windows are January–mid-March and June–October. July–September is the busiest on the mountain; January–February is quieter with similarly good conditions.
For Zanzibar
Zanzibar's calendar runs a little differently from the mainland safari circuit. June–October is dry and popular. December–February is hot and mostly dry, good for beach time. Avoid April–May if possible — the long rains hit the islands hard, and some smaller lodges close entirely.
The bottom line
If you're combining safari and Zanzibar in one trip and want to avoid the rains altogether, late June through September is the safest all-around window — though it's also the most expensive and crowded. If budget and smaller crowds matter more than picture-perfect weather, look at January–February instead.
